How do the compass points work with Feng Shui design?

Basic influences and associations for the compass directions in Feng Shui.

A major key in Feng Shui is the importance of direction. Each compass point is associated with specific life areas, colors, and elements.

In a previous post, I introduced the Bagua chart and a simple list of the directions and their associated areas, colors, and elements. (There’s a link down below.)

In this post, I explain the relationship a little further while still trying to make it simple enough for you to apply it to your living environment.

South

The South direction sits at the top of the Bagua chart for a reason. South is important to the Chinese and it has many positive implications. For instance, South is associated with summer, heat, and warmth.

In the summer people get outside to enjoy nature. They socialize and celebrate more often. Therefore, fame and fortune are connected to the South facing direction.

Fame in this sense doesn’t necessarily refer to being famous, as in everyone in the world recognizes you. It relates to your personal reputation, how your friends, family, and business associates see you.

This area is important if you want to improve your standing, gain people’s trust, and build a successful business/career.

Color — The color red is the dominant color of the South sector, but orange, vibrant yellow, and pink are also good accent colors for this area. Think of fire and heat.

And speaking of heat, fire is the element for the South sector. You won’t need to install a fireplace. Candles or a salt lamp will lend good representation.

Number — The number nine governs the South sector of your home. But don’t go lighting nine red candles or throwing nine pink pillows on the bed. That would be overkill and likely bring negative energy into your space.

Remember, Feng Shui principles discourage clutter.

My living room faces the South and I’m still trying to decide how to naturally incorporate the number nine into the space.
